In 2023, we appointed a placemaking team (of architects, landscape architects, social and economic researchers, and transport planners) led by <a href="https://www.harperperry.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Harper Perry</a> and <a href="https://mawsonkerr.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MawsonKerr</a> to help develop a long-term plan and vision for the area.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1713195505/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/mvcx16fllx46psws2w04.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original="">As part of the first stage of work, the team carried out research to develop an understanding of the five high streets in the Newcastle East Project Area. Five main themes were considered for each high street including:<ol><li>Population</li><li>Community Infrastructure and Public Realm</li><li>Economic Mix</li><li>Landscape, Ecology and Biodiversity</li><li>Access, Mobility and Legibility</li></ol>The report summarises the research findings for each of these themes and high streets, setting out key priorities that could inform future plans.The next stages of the project will test these priorities through engagement and collaboration with local communities and stakeholder organisations before finally setting out a future strategy for investment and development across the five high streets.You can take a look at the summary below.&nbsp;

<h1 id="isPasted">Our Chillingham Road - Rain Garden</h1>As part of the Newcastle East High Streets project, we have funding to deliver some improvements to the feel and quality of public space in and around the five project high streets.We have been working with Chillingham Road Primary School to develop a design to improve a public space adjacent to the school, at the junction of Ninth Avenue and Chillingham Road.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1711120068/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/xudgxxtltsxxzsojeetu.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original=""><h2>Current Situation</h2>The area is currently covered by paving, adding little to the feel and environmental quality of Chillingham Road, as seen in the photographs below:<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1711120078/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/viet12rqkhc5cnvrmt0j.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original="">The space also suffers from surface water flooding which we are hoping to address through the integration of sustainable drainage systems as part of the project proposal.The top three priorities for Chillingham Road that were identified as part of the project&rsquo;s initial online community consultation and engagement were:<ol><li>Less traffic &ndash; 59% &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Increased greenery &ndash; 45% &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Protected space for cycling &ndash; 43%</li></ol>You can take a look at the Engagement Report, which captures all of the feedback from the first stage of engagement <a href="https://newcastleeast.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/newcastle-east-inclusive-healthy-vibrant-high-streets-project-engagement-report/step1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>.<h2>Design Proposal</h2>We are proposing to build two rain gardens* with a variety of planting and trees within them and some seating areas. Spaces for Everyone Grant Scheme

<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1709655627/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/mjot46kcohwiytde6h76.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original="">We are offering grant funding that will support projects to improve the quality and feel of public space in and around five high streets (Chillingham Road, Heaton Road, Heaton Park Road, Shields Road and Welbeck Road) in the inner east of the city. &nbsp;During this project&rsquo;s initial engagement phase (August to October 2022) residents highlighted a number of issues in relation to the environmental streetscape, including insufficient green space and a lack of child friendly provision.More greenery features amongst the top three priorities for the high streets, with residents recommending increased tree planting, planters, pocket parks and spaces for growing edibles. Alongside this, people-friendly spaces were requested including places to socialise and more benches and seating areas. We welcome other public realm improvements such as landscaping to improve biodiversity and health and wellbeing.The level of funding available is limited and demand is expected to be high. Grants will be awarded in line with the eligibility criteria below, but we retain the right to amend or close the scheme at any time.

Funding is also available to deliver events on and around the high streets.The funds are aimed at making real improvements for people living, visiting, and working in the area and could be used by community groups, local businesses, or charities to take over an empty property or hold community events, markets, or pop-up shops.We developed these grants based on what people living in the area told us they would like to see, to encourage more people to use and enjoy what their local high street has to offer.Feedback gathered through the Commonplace online survey and events highlighted that people want to see empty buildings brought back in to use to improve the appearance of the high street. Please note: Applications will be accepted under the current version of the Empty Properties Grant Scheme up to and including Friday 31 May 2024. After this date, the scheme will be paused and reviewed.Grants worth up to &pound;10,000 are available for community events in the area (for costs such as professional fees, marketing expenses and hiring of materials and equipment).Who can applyThese grants are open to small businesses, sole traders, charities, community interest companies and arts and cultural groups. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1673361798/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/jmunt4xs1nwo2m5vxrlz.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original=""> We are pleased to share the Newcastle East High Streets Project Engagement Report (please see link at the bottom of the page).&nbsp; This report presents an analysis of first stage engagement feedback from the project, which gathered views and ideas from residents and stakeholders about Chillingham Road, Heaton Road, Heaton Park Road, Shields Road and Welbeck Road with a focus on public space, how people get around, buildings and their use. Engagement ran from mid-August to the end of October 2022, with close to 1,000 online and face-to-face contributions&nbsp;collected from across the east end&nbsp;and beyond.&nbsp;&nbsp;The current quality and feel of public space&nbsp;is consistently the main driver behind negative comments. Transport links (commonly translating as &#39;excessive traffic&#39;), insufficient green space and a poor variety in terms of the current retail offer, often compound negative feelings.&nbsp;Six key messages emerged from the analysis which will inform&nbsp;the next phase of the project, including developing a long-term plan for the area and launching a grants scheme that will enable improvements and animation of the five high streets. &nbsp; 1.&nbsp;Consultation feedback is presented impartially and independently, providing a snapshot of views and ideas&nbsp;Close to 1,000 contributions were collated and analysed objectively and accurately, to fairly represent the views of contributors, without agenda or preconception.&nbsp;We cannot say that these contributions are representative of all those connected to the east end, but nor are they intended to be. This is largely due to the self-selection of contributors and the ability of contributors to make multiple comments.&nbsp; 2.&nbsp;Of the five high streets, Shields Road is the most commented upon&nbsp;Shields Road attracted the largest public commentary, with 80% of commentators raising issues or concerns. There is less positivity across older generations, among whom there is a comparison with better days gone by. Comments generally relate to concerns around retail provision, anti-social behaviour and the need for increased greening, decluttering, people friendly space and more small, independent shops selling fresh food. &nbsp; 3.&nbsp;The quality and feel of public space are one of the main reasons behind negative responses&nbsp;Feelings of decline are felt to have moved people away from the high streets in the east end. There are a number of issues highlighted in relation to the environmental streetscape, including insufficient green space, appearance of empty properties and a lack of child friendly provision.&nbsp; &nbsp;4. The volume and speed of motorised traffic is frequently mentioned&nbsp;Traffic is regarded as heavy, polluting and not conducive to pedestrian safety, deterring people from seeing high streets as attractive destinations. Connectivity between the high streets and neighbourhoods, as well as the difficulty of using active travel to get around the area, are highlighted as problems. Less traffic appears as a top three environmental improvement in relation to four of the five high street areas, with better pavements and walking space requested, alongside safer crossings. &nbsp; 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a desire to enhance and diversify the high street offer&nbsp;There was felt to be a poor variety of in terms of the current offer. Small independent shops including those selling fresh food, the provision of cultural opportunities, activities for older people, children and families were frequently requested. &nbsp; 6.&nbsp;There is a need for further engagement to address gaps identified in the report&nbsp;From the feedback gathered, there is a clear need for further engagement regarding Welbeck Road, only 12 contributions were received, which accounts for just 2% of all Commonplace and face-to-face responses. There is also a need to extend engagement to underrepresented groups during the subsequent project phases. Further co-design and participatory work is planned to aid in the re-imagining of the future of high streets, help develop ideas and create positive change.&nbsp; Thank you to all who provided feedback in this first stage; your input has been most appreciated.&nbsp;This is part of 2-year project and there will be further opportunities to engage and shape more detailed plans for our high streets.

Business Event 6 December 2022 – Go Green for Business Growth Workshop

As part of this high streets project, businesses based in the inner east of the city can get support from our Citylife Business Support programme through external experts to develop, grow and diversify their business.Citylife aims to support businesses to adapt to the changing high street landscape, whether that&rsquo;s providing new or additional ways to interact and provide your products and services, or reviewing the business premise you occupy and finding new ways to attract and retain customers.We have over 40 experts on hand through the Citylife Business Support programme who can help you in a wide range of business areas, for example marketing, websites and digital communications (such as social media and podcasting), retail experts, green sustainable business, finance and funding and many more. <h1>Our Welbeck Road - Tree Planting</h1>As part of the Newcastle East High Streets project, we have funding to deliver some improvements to the feel and quality of public space in and around the five project high streets.We have been working with Welbeck Academy to develop a design to improve the public realm along the Academy&rsquo;s grounds boundary with Welbeck Road.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1710929072/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/vucm87ty7rwt1pmjrpux.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original=""><h2>Current Situation</h2>The area along the school boundary is currently fenced off with grass fields behind, adding little to the feel and environmental quality of Welbeck Road, as seen in the photographs below:<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1710928949/projects/628b937accddf0248addee58/zorighivdfmffbvvzyrp.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-alt-original="">The top three priorities for Welbeck Road that were identified as part of the project&rsquo;s initial online community consultation and engagement were:<ol><li>Child friendly spaces - 58%&nbsp;</li><li>Provision of benches/seating areas - 50%&nbsp;</li><li>Less traffic and markets/pop-ups - 33%</li></ol>You can take a look at the Engagement Report, which captures all of the feedback from the first stage of engagement <a href="https://newcastleeast.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/newcastle-east-inclusive-healthy-vibrant-high-streets-project-engagement-report/step1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>.<h2>Design Proposal</h2>We are proposing to relocate the current fence, moving this approximately 10 metres south, to create an open planted space that will run alongside the footpath for everyone to enjoy.Current designs for the new landscaped area include planting 10 semi-mature trees and a number of extra heavy standard trees with a wildflower garden surrounding them.
