Summer on the Square

As part of the Newcastle East High Streets project, we are putting on a programme of free events on Hadrian Square and Shields Road, Byker. 

Please see below for the full events programme.

Any children under 11 should be accompanied by an adult and anyone under the age of 16 will require parent or carer consent.

Programme

Saturday 20 July | 10am - 7pm
Movies on Hadrian Square
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

Join us for our first ever open-air ­­screenings on Hadrian Square!

Some seating will be provided but please feel free to bring your own camping / deckchairs if you wish. 

Screenings:
10am - Encanto (PG)
1pm - The Little Mermaid, 2023 (PG)
4pm - Suprise performance
5pm - Dirty Dancing (12A)*
*Please be aware, this film is classified as 12A, for more information on the rating you can visit the British Board of Film Classification website.

Thursday 25 July | 10am - 6pm
Colouring in!
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

North East based street artist Mul has brought joy and colour to Newcastle with his iconic murals and motifs - and now, for one day only, Hadrian Square, will be filled with giant colouring in sculptures showcasing his art for YOU to colour in.

Thursday 1 August | 10am - 2pm
Storytime on the Square
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL. 

Creative story sessions with play sculptures for 0-5yrs. Led by local early years children's company Cherry and Bee. Cherry and Bee specialise in imaginative sessions for children that combine storytelling, music and sensory activities.

Stories will take place on the hour, every hour.

Sunday 4 August | 10am - 12pm
Rubber Duck!
Location: Hadrian Square and East End Pool, NE6 1AL. 

The Rubber Duck has been a symbol of play for both adults and children alike since its invention in the 1800s. Join us on Hadrian Square and step into a world where our number one priority is to play.

A physical theatre circus experience in association with Newcastle Circus Arts. Newcastle Circus Arts is a community led social enterprise that uses circus to change lives in the North East.

There will be swimming pool performances inside the East End Pool at: 10:10am, 10:30am, 10:50am, 11:10am and 11:25am.

Monday 5 August | 12 - 5pm
Tuesday 6 August | 10am - 5pm with dance performances
Metro Ball Pool
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

As NEXUS welcomes the start of its new style fleet, we pay tribute to the classic metro model that has become a legendary symbol in Newcastle since the 80s. On Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th August, Hadrian Square will become home for a giant model of the Metro train filled with ball pool balls - as sometimes life isn’t about the destination, it is about having fun on the way!

Monday Schedule:
12-1:30pm - Under 5’s, 1:30pm-3pm - 5-12yrs, 3pm-5pm - All ages.

Tuesday Schedule:
10-2pm - Under 5’s, 12-2pm - 5-12yrs, 2-5pm - All ages.
with dance performances at 3:30pm and 4:30pm, choreographed by Holly Irving

Remember - with Nexus you can “Take the kids for free” - Up to three kids aged 11 and under can travel for free on Metro and the Shields Ferry, all day, every day, when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Monday 12 - Friday 23 August | Weekdays 10am - 3pm
Puppet Treasure Hunt
Starting Location: East End Pool, NE6 1AL.

Moving Parts Arts has been busy creating 10 unique puppets to come and live in their new homes on Shields Road - Pick up a map from the East End Pool to follow the treasure map and find all the characters!

Moving Parts Arts is an award winning arts and community development organisation based in Newcastle who use puppetry and outdoor arts as a vehicle to connect people through creativity.

Hadrian Market
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

Local food and craft stalls - free music, entertainment and face paint!

Friday 23 August | 12 - 5:30pm
Cardboard Road
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

An interactive miniature model of Shields Road will appear in Hadrian Square. It depicts the historical past, the vibrant present and the possible future of the road...

Created by Moving Parts Arts - artists Chloe Rodham and Mark Rogerson - with input from Hotspur Primary School, Byker.

Saturday 24 August | 11am - 6:30pm
Byker Groove
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

An all-day music festival showcasing local talent with acts from Georgia May, George Welch and Christine Jeans, Melanie Baker, Kay Greyson, The Baghdaddies and Azula Bandit! Keep an eye out for surprise theatrical performances throughout the day.

Shields Road Performance Trail
Starting Location: The field next to the Cumberland Arms, NE6 1LD.

Hidden performances to find in secret locations! Meet at the first location of the trail - The field next to The Cumberland Arms - and pick up a map before heading to Shields Road.

Sunday 1 September | 2 - 4pm
Photography Exhibition
Location: Hadrian Square, NE6 1AL.

A series of work by local photographer Will Creswick - documenting the summer events programme on Hadrian Square and Shields Road with portraits of the people involved. Will’s work is reactive to the spaces and people around him, often blurring the line between dark and witty, to embrace the photograph as a site for introspection and interpretation.

The Breakfast Club - By East End Pool
From 8:30am -10:00am Monday - Friday throughout the programme of events children will receive a free breakfast, board games and arts and crafts courtesy of the East End Pool, NE6 1AL.
